Old water turbine
Mumford River water was diverted into the basement of the Whitin Mill where it spun 3 turbines which in turn were connected to levers, pullies, and wheels for cotton manufacturing originally. Decades of toxic metal pollution – Mercury was commonly dumped directly into the turbine pit-were remediated and capped but the area remained too contaminted to be resurrected for the modern turbine installation.
